Happy Holidays! Here is the free excerpt we promised from our award winning book:

DON’T WAIT FOR THE PERFECT TIME / TO GET LUCKY

Start now with what you’ve got and do the best you can with those resources. Scale up every month. Don’t wait until everything is perfect. There will never be a perfect time. Too many artists spend too much time planning their music career but never actually drop anything successfully. Not everything needs to go perfect – It just needs to get done. Start building momentum however you can, whenever you can.

This game is about repetition. The more you do it the better you will get at it. You will make mistakes here and there so learn from them the first time they happen. Repeating mistakes might make you seem foolish or unlucky. Getting lucky is a direct result of being prepared and putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Outworking and outsmarting your competition will improve your chances of getting lucky.

Don’t take this as us saying to drop releases right when you leave the studio. You should always wait at-least 30 days before dropping a release so that you can build anticipation and presales. The first hour of activity on social media will be vital to success and organic growth. Have influencers ready to rock. We want to be clear that you should be focusing on building strong content that the people will LOVE – but don’t sit back and wait on the next man to put you on – make it happen.

PLANNING: DAY 1 THRU 1000
The music industry is very hectic. Things come up last minute, people call with opportunities and want immediate answers, and YOU need to stay organized. As we suggested earlier – you should take a moment and pull out a piece of paper as you read this book. Take out another. At the top write “TO DO LIST” then below it make 2 columns labeled ‘Short Term’ and ‘Long Term’. As you read this book add to it…. because you are a winner now. Winners don’t say they “should” do things. They hit game winning shots. They miss some too so don’t let failure derail or demotivate you.

Que the great Michael Jordan:
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the
game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Michael Jordan

You don’t have to win in every situation. Not every interaction will lead to a next step. The music industry can be both a learning process and a numbers game. You need to educate yourself (which you now are) and HAVE THE WILL TO SUCEED. Part of having the will to succeed is the ability to move on from rejection. If you aren’t willing to get 99 NO’s before you hear that 1 YES, you don’t want this bad enough.

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”
Michael Jordan

The Short and Long Term To-Do list I told you to start is just one piece of the puzzle. You should make another one. You need a DAILY to do list. If music is not your full time job you may not think you need it every day – but it’s great to stay organized. Music isn’t the only thing on your mind. You have bills, you may have kids, household tasks, you have friends, maybe a significant other – you need to manage all of them.

Back when I (Derek) worked in Politics they taught me to do this daily “To Do” list. I know you’re all like – Politics?
What? But anyways ,when I was in college I was referred to for a start up project by a graduate student. I grew up and went to school in New Hampshire which has the first in the nation primary – and it kind of just fell into place. It was a site WhosYourCandidate.com which has since closed (it was a time specific non-partisan push focused on breaking down where all the 2008 Presidential Candidates stood on all the different issues) – and I later worked for a labor union as an Online Coordinator and Regional Organizer for the health care reform campaign. All of the full time political organizers I worked with swore by these lists. They had to multitask 10+ daily duties – so the list eliminated them getting overwhelmed.

I carried this to the music business to get ahead in my aspirations. Instead of thinking “dang, there’s so much I gotta do to get there” you just need to make a detailed list and get it done. Your list should grow – it should be rewritten – but you NEED to cross out objectives. I tell people – I may not be the best at what I do yet at – But every month I’m so much stronger than the previous. I’ll get there. As long as I kept crossing off objectives daily – my goals continued to be closer and closer until they became reality. Having your lists of ‘Long Term Goals/Short Term Goals’ and your ‘Daily To-Do List’ – you will be able to envision your dreams as they become reality. Remember how in the first subject we taught you that keeping positive things in your mind will bring them to fruition quicker? This is one of the many ways to make that statement truth. If you want something – keep in it sight. Make the lists. Maybe even make a vision board (poster of things you want to achieve) if that will help. Stay organized and you will grow faster and attain everything you want in life. There’s levels to this shit – so apply the cheat codes if you want to get to the higher levels without wasting precious time.

SET ACHIEVABLE GOALS (LONG TERM/SHORT TERM)

Achieving major success requires setting both short and long term goals. It’s important to identify several important steps you will need to take on the path to you bigger goals. Dreams are not goals. A goal must be written down and have a date by which you intend to complete it.

As an example, let’s say that your eventual goal is to transition to a songwriter. Right now, you’re working at a day job — but your long-term goal (five-ten years) is to write charting songs. You also need a mid-term goal that’s achievable in one to four years because it’s unlikely one can go from being a Chef or Uber Driver to a hit songwriter overnight. So what might be a good mid-term goal?

Long before you set goals of 100 million views on YouTube, a million streams on Spotify or performing in a sold out arena, there are several types of milestones which will help your success. On the next page we highlight several ideas that work for different positions within the industry:

– Artists and Managers – Set a goal to move your first 100 merchandise items. (later expand it to
500, 1000).

– Book your own venue and build your own lineup – with you headlining. Collect the door profits.

– Get 10+ fans to flood your local radio stations with requests – and get played.

– Get placed in your favorite local newspaper / magazine (tip: Involve a charity project)

– Audition for something (like a TV show).

– Create a website and start building an email fan list to push your releases and merchandise.

– Set a health/image goal.

– Set a number for a reasonable amount of downloads you can grind for and achieve within 30 days after a release.

– Set a goal to get 2 new media (web / radio / etc) platforms to support you each week.
